13/01/10 10 PEOPLE, 10 PEAKS, TEN THOUSAND POUNDS

Members of the D'Angibau Mountain Challenge team were thrilled to hand over a cheque for £10,000 to Lewis Manning Hospice just before Christmas.
10 members of D'Angibau LLP scaled 10 peaks in the Lake District, including Scafell Pike, Bowfell, Great Gable and Haystacks, in September to raise money for the hospice’s new "Time to Care Appeal". The challenge took place over just one day and the team walked and climbed for 13 1/2 hours with every member of the team completing the challenge.
Lewis Manning are thrilled with the amount raised and have confirmed that £10,000 will purchase all the beds needed for the new state of the art in-patient unit that is planned to be built within the existing hospice grounds later this year. The new unit will provide planned and emergency respite care, as well as intensive rehabilitation and will be a choice for some towards the end of their life. This all round care will be unique locally and all services will remain free of charge.
Robert Fielding, a partner in D'Angibau, whose idea it was to climb the 10
peaks said:
"The whole team are thrilled to have raised such a fantastic sum of money and would like to thank all those clients, business contacts, family, friends and colleagues who sponsored us. The sum is even more remarkable in the current economic climate and we are amazed by people’s generosity. Lewis Manning plays a valuable part in our local community and we are so excited that this money has started off their new campaign in such a positive way, we feel privileged to have been involved"

Many people will have heard of the “Three Peaks Challenge”, but here at D’Angibau we thought we could do more. As we go to print, 10 members of our firm have just returned from our “10-Peak Challenge”, raising money for Lewis Manning Hospice in Poole.
The team were hoping to scale 10 of the highest peaks in the Lake District, including Bow Fell, Scafell Pike, Great Gable and Haystacks, in a target time of just 12 hours! To give you an idea of the task, the challenge is equivalent to walking for more than 11 miles, then climbing up and down nearly 600 flights of stairs, all in a single day. All 10 members of the team completed the task although, due to adverse weather conditions, it took a total of 13 ½ hours, with only a 10 minute stop for lunch and instead of stairs there were lots of very large rocks to climb up and down!
The team consisted of partners, solicitors and administration staff and they have been training since January of this year. Each individual had their own personal training programme and they have also been walking together in the Purbecks and along the Dorset coast.
A couple of weeks ago the team had a training weekend in the Brecon Beacons where they battled the elements (gale force winds, driving rain and thick hill fog) to scale a total of 1,570 metres, walking 23 km over 9 ½ hours – they learned that having socks full of water prevents blisters and that the best time to put on waterproof clothing is before it rains! Unfortunately the weather in the Lake District was not much better, the main issue being the fog, which meant that there was heavy reliance on map and compass. Fortunately there were two experienced Mountain Guides accompanying the team who had responsibility for the map work, otherwise they might not have made it back at all. The day brought many challenges but spirits were high (well most of the time) and the team supported one another throughout the day.
Over the last few months and especially on the day itself the team have all learned a lot about each other and themselves as individuals, but most importantly have raised funds for a very worthwhile cause. Lewis Manning is Poole’s local voluntary hospice, providing specialist palliative care to local people living with cancer or other life-threatening illnesses. The hospice provides support to roughly 600 people each year and its services are completely free. We feel especially privileged to be able to support Lewis Manning and we hope that our friends and clients will support our effort in whatever way they feel appropriate.

17/08/09 - Brecon Beacons Training Walk 15th August
The team of walkers can now genuinely call themselves "mountaineers".
We set off for Wales on Friday afternoon in glorious sunshine, we returned on Sunday afternoon to glorious sunshine, what came in between was not glorious sunshine! We learned that rain can come at you from every angle and that wind can very nearly blow you over!
On Friday evening we met at the Starr Inn for dinner and everyone was full of anticipation for what lay ahead. Having got married on Thursday, Claire and husband Kieran decided that climbing mountains in Wales with 10 other people was the ideal way to spend their honeymoon, so we had a glass of fizz and some cake to celebrate.
We were all up bright and early on Saturday morning and despite it being a bit overcast we were all keen to get started. We set off at about 9.30 and just as we started so did the rain and it wasn’t long before we were all drenched, but the weather did not dampen our spirits and we plodded on. Apparently the scenery in the Brecon Beacons is amazing! Unfortunately we did not see much of it, although during the rare breaks in the weather we had a couple of stunning views of the valleys below and walking down a mountain with a rainbow in front of us was a truly amazing sight.
We arrived back at the car park at approximately 7.30 pm wet, tired and actually rather pleased with ourselves. We did some stretching exercises, nipped back to our accommodation to change and then met up again in Brecon for a celebratory dinner, although by 11.00pm we were all ready for our beds!
Despite the weather we had an excellent training walk, covering 23 km, a total ascent of 1570 metres and a total descent of 1570metres. The conditions could not have been much worse with dense hill fog, driving rain and gale force winds but at least we know what we might expect in the Lakes in just 5 weeks time. The morale amongst the team was excellent and everybody did extremely well. We also tested our kit to the limit – we now know that Dan’s trousers can cope with huge amounts of dirt, acquired by sliding down the side of a mountain (much quicker than walking or climbing) and that socks filled with water prevent blisters!
We have been assured by our Mountain Leaders that we can all complete the challenge and we now have some understanding of why it is called a "challenge"! The training will continue for the next few weeks so that we will be "match fit" by 19th September. Sponsorship is going well, we are very grateful for all the support that has been shown so far. We will continue to seek more sponsorship between now and the challenge itself so, if you have not done so already, please add your name to the list : www.justgiving.com/dangibaumountainchallenge09

13/08/09 - Long-serving members of staff
We are very pleased to note that we have a number of staff anniversaries in August and September.
Congratulations to:
John Bain 40 years
Jo Tout 25 years
Judy Shires 20 years
The partners would like to thank John, Judy and Jo for their loyal service over the years, their contribution to the firm is much appreciated and their experience has been invaluable.
27/07/09 - Walk 25th July 2009
With only 8 weeks until the 10-peak challenge the training walks have stepped up a gear. Saturday saw 8 members of the team embark on a 20-mile circular walk from Corfe Castle taking in Swanage, Durlston, St Aldhelms Head, Houns Tout and back, cross country, to Corfe Castle.
We left Corfe Castle at 8.15am and made good progress along Nine Barrow Down with a fantastic view of the castle at the top. We were at Durlston Country Park by 11.00am where Jonathan Harvey met us with much-appreciated cold drinks and snack bars!
We then followed the South West Coast path taking in Dancing Ledge, Seacombe and Winspit. Unfortunately a number of the group had to depart early due to other commitments that afternoon and evening but 4 hardy (or should we say fool-hardy) souls continued to St Aldhelms Head and Houns Tout. The steep steps up and down were easier than the last time we did them but by the time we turned in-land we all knew we had done a long, hard walk. Dan's description of having elephant's feet that were tap-dancing on razor blades seemed to sum up the situation.
The weather remained beautiful all day, with gentle sea breezes that were a welcome relief. The scenery was amazing and we all agreed that we live in a fantastic area. We all felt we had come a long way since training started at the beginning of the year but know we still have a way to go before we are "match fit"!
The next training session will be in the Brecon Beacons on the weekend of 15/16 August which should give us a fair taste of what to expect in the Lakes in September.

17/06/09 - New Solicitor at Canford Cliffs branch
It's nice to have some good news for a change and at a time when many firms are making redundancies and the news is full of doom and gloom D'Angibau LLP are very pleased to welcome Caroline Cake to the firm. Caroline joins our Probate Department in Canford Cliffs and is thrilled to be part of this expanding and busy team. Caroline will be working alongside Probate Partner Robert Fielding and Probate Executive, Jo Tout and will be pleased to hear from anyone wishing to make a Will or enquire about a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA).
Caroline lives locally and enjoys horseriding and sailing. Caroline is also the newest member of our "mountaineering" team who will be taking part in a 10-peak challenge in the Lake District in September to raise funds for Lewis Manning Hospice.
16/06/09 - The D'Angibau 2009 Mountain Challenge
We split into two groups for our training walk on 27th June. The walk took us through beautiful countryside around Milton Abbas, Wooland Hill, along the Wessex Ridgeway and then round to Winterborne Stickland before returning to Milton Abbas. The first group started at 07.30 a.m. in the village of Ibberton - they faced a stiff initial ascent up to the Wessex Ridgeway though the thick but cool early morning mist - on the other hand the first group managed to finish their walk at about 12.30 when the Crown Inn at Ibberton beckoned!. The second group started in Milton Abbas at 09.00 and finished at Milton Abbas just short of 3.00 pm. The walk was about 12 miles and the two groups met in Milton Park Wood at around 09.30 in a scene reminiscent of Stanley finding Livingston in the jungle!

01/06/09 - Getting closer to event
Training is improving and getting closer to what we might expect to endure for the event. On Saturday 30th May we had a glorious - if a little challenging - circular walk along the Jurassic Coast between Tyneham and Durdle Door. The walk was just over 11.5 miles in length but involved at least six stiff ascents with an aggregate height gain of over 3,200 feet. The weather was fine and clear - the nice sea breeze saved us from completely frying!
Please enjoy the pictures.

26/05/09 - Three more walks under our belt
With three more walks under our belt we are all beginning to look forward - or should that be "beginning to be afraid of" - our September Mountain Challenge.
On 4th April we completed a 9 mile walk in marvellous open countryside over Cranbourne Chase taking in Pentridge and Penbury Knoll. A walk followed this that some of us would like to forget out of Cerne Abbas on 18th April. It was supposed to be a 12 mile circular walk taking in Giant Hill, Lyons Gate, Hermitage and Minterne Magna, but unfortunately the ground topography bore little resemblance to what was on the OS map (that's technical language for "the leader got lost!"); still - we did a good ten miles in lovely countryside, even if part of it did seem to be walking in ever decreasing circles around one farmhouse!

8th April saw us team up with our Mountain Leaders for the event - Kate and
Ross Worthington - who we impressed with an energetic 11 mile walk taking in Worth Matravers, Seacombe, St Aldhelms Head, Chapman's Pool, Kingston and Corfe Castle.
Next up - an even more energetic Coastal walk taking in Tyneham Village, Gad Cliff, Flowers Barrow, Bindon Hill, Lulworth Cove, Durdle Door and return. This will take place on 30th May, and involves a combined ascent of over 3,000 feet. If I am still walking in a couple of weeks, I will post a further report on how it went.

17/05/09 - Match report from Sunday 17th May
"It was a cold and blustery sunday morning when the D'Angibau team lined up for the first match against Lester Aldridge.
Player Manager Pete Johnson gave the team a pre match talk and discussed tactics, and in particular warned our plucky players not to go near girls and bring them down (a wise man indeed!).
After the initial warm up and one sin bin offence by Brett "feel the force" Lucas the team lost 2-0 although it was generally agreed that this was due to bad luck rather than poor skills.
The next match was a lively battle against wild card team the Fencing Centre, who contrary to popular belief, are not a firm specialising in boundary disputes. The opposing team proved less than wooden and headbutted one of our stars, Mr Kieran "pocket rocket" Brown. This resulted in Gary "Ronaldinho" Clarke wading in and protecting his fellow teammate, ensuing in a minor scuffle. The offending player was red carded and sent off but could be heard muttering "if he wants to bring it out here then I ll have him....." Subsequent apologies to the ref fell on deaf ears and the player was not allowed to go back into the tournament. I am pleased to report that our pocket rocket was able to continue undeterred with his thundering strikes on goal, although the game resulted in a 2 all draw much to our disappointment. The moral victory was, however, ours.
Despite this our team continued to play throughout the next matches although luck was not on our side a rather satisfying draw against Coles Miller followed, and a convincing 4-6 win against Preston Redman where our team pulled it back from 4-0 despite the player manager shouting "watch out boys if we carry on like this we ll end up in the final!" Once again our team listened to the manager and such was the team's spirit we won!!
It was then on to the final against Coles Miller, which resulted in a 2-2 draw and a nail biting penalty shoot out.
Pete "The Rock" Johnson was unshakeable as he stepped up to the mark, sheer grit and determination written all over his face. Each team took it in turn and sportsman like behaviour was displayed by our lads, Theone "Crouch" Coleman executing a particularly crowd pleasing robot dance after his convincing shot resounded off the back of the net. Pete held it together and suddenly we were victorious! The supporting crowd went mad and only the metal fences surrounding the pitches held them back from the traditional pitch invasion.
The cup was presented to Pete by the Law Society president Joss Payne, our victorious cheers ringing in the ears of Coles Miller partner Chris Whittle (see picture for our own Mrs Clarke's mature and sporting gestures).
Your roving reporter is pleased to confirm that, as far as the writer is aware, we brought home silver for the first time in the firm's brave but unremarkable history of sporting endeavour. Yes, the cup is that small but as we all know its not the size but the quality that counts...
Our thanks go out to all of those who came along, to those who played, those who leant us their partners, and to our most vociforous supporters (yes, thats you, Claire "Foghorn" Vinycomb).
A fun day was had by all and I m sure we are all looking forward to more sporting fun at next weeks Rugby Sevens festival!

07/03/09 - The D'Angibau 2009 Mountain Challenge

We stepped up a gear on Saturday 7th March with a relatively strenuous ten-mile circular walk between Ringstead and Lulworth Cove.
The walk took us in bright sunshine along the ridgeway out of Ringstead and over to Lulworth Cove, along which there were fine views of the surrounding countryside and coast. At Lulworth some of us stopped off for a coffee and one of the delicious Purbeck Ice Creams.
We then undertook the fairly arduous return journey to Ringstead along the South West Coast path, stopping for sandwiches near Durdle Door. The combined ascent and descent amounted to around 1800 feet and we completed the walk in a time of just less than 4 hours, which was an hour less than the guide time.
The walk was memorable for two reasons other than the fine views and companionship: first it showed some of us (we know who we are) just how unfit we really are; second it led to the first official appointment within the group - Claire Vineycombe has been appointed as the group's official pet rescue officer. Congratulations Claire!
Onwards and upwards!!
Robert
19/02/09 - The D'Angibau 2009 Mountain Challenge

This September ten members of our firm will attempt to climb ten of England's highest mountains for charity.
The challenge will take place in the beautiful Lake District and comprises a rollercoaster ride up and down ten of the highest peaks between the Langdale Valley and Buttermere. These include England's highest - Scafell Pike at over 3,200 feet - as well as Bowfell, Great Gable and Haystacks.
We aim to complete the challenge within a target time of twelve hours.
The event is unique to our firm - no other organisation is taking part - and we are undertaking it to raise funds for Lewis Manning Hospice in Lilliput, Poole.
Lewis Manning is Poole's local voluntary hospice, providing specialist palliative care to local people living with cancer or other life-threatening illnesses. The hospice provides support to roughly 600 people each year and its' services are completely free. We feel especially privileged to be able to support Lewis Manning and we hope that our friends and clients will support our effort in whatever way they feel appropriate.
Our mountain challenge will not be easy to complete, and "the team" has been actively training since the beginning of the year. We walk together at least once a month either in the hills of North Dorset or the Purbecks, and our walks are gradually increasing in both gradient and length. We have also planned a full weekend of mountain walking in the Brecon Beacons later in the year as part of our training.
If you wish to support our fund raising effort for Lewis Manning, we invite you to either drop into one of our offices where you will find a sponsorship form, or visit our Just Giving website atwww.justgiving.com/dangibaumountainchallenge09
Thank you.
We are grateful for the support from our sponsors Cotswold.
