28/10/09 OBITUARY – DEREK NOEL HAYNES (1932 - 2009)
It is with great sadness that we report the death of Derek Haynes on 30th September 2009.
Derek Noel Haynes was born in 1932. His father and uncle were staunch Poole men and Aldermen of the Town. Educated at Shrewsbury, he did National Service with the Royal Artillery. In 1953 he became articled to William Edward D'Angibau at D'Angibau and Malim, Boscombe and after qualifying he spent a short time with Adrian Greenwood where he managed his office during Adrian's illness. He then returned to the office at Boscombe and very soon became a partner with the late Mr. D'Angibau and John Payne. A clever and resourceful advocate, he took on a tremendous workload and throughout was completely conscientious towards and much respected by his clients and fellow professionals as well as the staff of the firm. The remaining partners and the staff owed to him an incalculable debt. He stepped down from the partnership in 1989 but remained a consultant for many years.
He was President of the Bournemouth and District Law Society in 1982-83, and served for many years on the Area Legal Aid Board as well as the Race Protest Committee.
In 1956 he married Heather Rogers, and had two children, Tim and Sue, and six grandchildren. He was a devoted family man and used to tell our staff with great pride of the exploits of Tim, Sue and the grandchildren.
His principal hobby was sailing and he was for over 60 years a member of the Parkstone Yacht Club, rising to be Commodore from 1972 to 1974. He was also Trustee of the Club for many years until he stood down in 2004.
He and Heather retired to Cornwall where he was able to enjoy his hobby for a good number of years.
The partners and staff of D’Angibau LLP wish to record their gratitude to Derek for his work for the firm and send their condolences to Heather and the family.

12/10/09 WHALES AT BOURNEMOUTH
The recent news of a whale washed up on Bournemouth beach made me rush to our archives because I remember writing an article in 1997 on the centenary of the “Great Boscombe Whale” story 100 years before.
On 9th January 1897 a 70’ whale weighing an estimated 40 tons was washed ashore at Pokesdown finally becoming stranded close to Boscombe Pier. A Doctor Spencer Simpson purchased the carcass from the Receiver of Wrecks for £27.00 and tried to sell the blubber. Everything went horribly wrong and the hapless doctor was involved in three court appearances in which he was represented by local solicitors, Mr D’Angibau and Mr Malim, the founders of our firm. For full details of the extraordinary events in 1897 please see my original press release.

06/10/09 TAX ON PARKING - another window tax? Beware all employers and their staff!
On 1st october the WPL (England) Regulations came into force. As from 2012 firms or companies who provide 11 or more parking spaces for staff will be charged £250 p.a. per space by the local authority. We understand that this charge can be passed on to employees (subject to the terms of any contract of employment)
In our opinion this is a completely unfair tax on employers who provide car parking facilities at their expense so their staff can park in safety without parking in the roads or taking the risk of using car parks which could be some way from the place of work. We shall monitor how this scheme is implemented and let our clients know if there are any ways around the regulations
