Hi – I’m Roger Turner, partner at Poole office. I agree with Fiona how important it is to have a Power of Attorney as well as an up-to-date Will in place.

In the property department we are now receiving more enquiries about buying properties at auction as clients can sometimes find great bargains. There are however many pitfalls to know about. If anyone is interested, have a look at my information for buyers by clicking on “Law Articles”.

If you want to bid at auction please give us a ring and we can give you lots of helpful information. We would like client feedback on how they fared at auction.

02/10/08 Notes from a Boscombe Lawyers desk

Hello, I guess I'd better start by introducing myself. My name is Fiona McArthur and I am a 35 year old solicitor working in the Boscombe Branch of D’Angibau LLP solicitors. We are based above the old Lloyds TSB office, near to the Royal Arcade. D’Angibau are the only solicitors in Boscombe and have been here for around 120 years. Personally I love working in Boscombe and as a firm we are committed to the area and to looking after the whole community, whether you need help because you are getting divorced, if you are moving house or even if you have been arrested we are right on your doorstep.

I was talking to one of my colleagues the other day and he mentioned a Lasting Power of Attorney, and asked me whether I have one. He said that they are necessary to make sure that if you are unable for any reason to deal with your own affairs whilst you are still alive, you can make sure that a person you trust is able to step in and take over. I remember that my grandmother had one when she was affected by Alzheimers and my mum was able to take over paying her day to day bills, hopefully I am a fair way off needing one of those. I was a bit worried though when he said to me that if I had a car crash or accident and was unable to sign cheques or look after my bank account then who would be able to do that? Apparently if you don t have one of these the court can appoint a government employee or stranger to step in. With a lasting power of attorney you can nominate a trusted friend or relative to do this and you will be safe in the knowledge that they will act in the way that you would have wanted. Needless to say I am definitely going to get one of these sorted out now, especially as I have a young son to think about.

If you would like to talk to any of our lawyers about a lasting power of attorney or a living will, or even would like to make a will then please pop into reception and we will see you as soon as possible. Our solicitors also make home visits if necessary.
