14/07/09 History of D'Angibau LLP (Part 2) by Roger Turner
The next photo from our archives is of Arthur Wentworth Malim (1855-1942) who was the joint founder of the original firm known as D’Angibau and Malim in 1891 with William D’Angibau featured in my article in May. This photograph shows Arthur Malim at his desk in the 1920’s and readers will be interested to note that the only aid on the desk is a telephone! In those days all documents were prepared by hand and then typed manually.
Arthur Malim was a partner with the firm from 1891 until his death in 1942. His grandson, Richard Malim, was senior partner for many years at the Canford Cliffs office retiring in 2001 having been with the firm just four years less than his grandfather.

If any readers have any memories of Arthur Malim or his grandson, Richard, they would like to share with us please let me know - rturner@dangibau.co.uk

While the various parties within Parliament continue to debate the merits of a local income tax, either as a boost to council tax revenues or a replacement for it, a new form of local taxation received Royal Assent last week and may soon hit a high street or industrial estate near you.
The Business Rate Supplements Act 2009 gives county councils, district and borough councils and the Greater London Assembly the power to impose an increase of up to two pence per pound of rateable value on commercial and industrial properties.
The only control is that income from the new tax must be used to "promote local economic development".
The Act has not yet been brought into force and it remains to be seen whether Business Rate Supplements will be applied by all local authorities.

Can you help with information?
My firm has been asked by Susan Stead of Spetisbury for any information we may have about the history of St Monica's Priory, Spetisbury.
She approached us because in 1927 my firm (then known as D'Angibau and Malim) acted on the sale of the Priory at an auction organised by Fox and Sons in conjunction with Balcome and Co. The auction was held at the Crown Hotel, Blandford on 9 June 1927 (see auction details attached).
Susan Stead is researching the history of the Priory which was occupied by ursuline nuns until 1926 when the Priory closed and was sold by auction the following year. Unfortunately, neither my firm nor the auctioneers have any papers which can help after this length of time.
If any readers of this blog can help please contact Sue Stead on spetisbury@gmail.com or me - Roger Turner - e-mail rturner@dangibau.co.uk
